چکیده

Context. This paper is a follow-up on the vast effort to collect radial velocity data for stars belonging to the Hipparcos survey. Aims. We aim at extending the orbital data available for binaries with M giant primaries. The data presented in this paper will be used in the companion papers of this series to (i) derive the binary frequency among M giants and compare it to that of K giants (Paper II) and (ii) analyse the eccentricity – period diagram and the mass-function distribution (Paper III). Methods. Keplerian solutions are fitted to radial-velocity data. However, for several stars, no satisfactory solution could be found, even though the radial-velocity standard deviation is greater than the instrumental error, because M giants suffer from intrinsic radialvelocity variations due to pulsations. We show that these intrinsic radial-velocity variations can be linked with both the average spectral-line width and the photometric variability. Results. We present an extensive collection of spectroscopic orbits for M giants with 12 new orbits, plus 17 from the literature. On top of these, 1 preliminary orbit yielded an approximate value for the eccentricity and the orbital period. Moreover, to illustrate how the large radial-velocity jitter present in Mira and semi-regular variables may easily be confused with orbital variations, we also present examples of pseudo-orbital variations (in S UMa, X Cnc, and possibly in HD 115521, a former IAU radial-velocity standard). Because of this difficulty, M giants involving Mira variables were excluded from our monitored sample. We finally show that the majority of M giants detected as X-ray sources are actually binaries. Conclusions. The data presented in this paper considerably increase the orbital data set for M giants, and will allow us to conduct a detailed analysis of the eccentricity – period diagram in a companion paper (Paper III).

Spectroscopic binaries among Hipparcos M giants ⋆ II . Binary frequency

Context. This paper is the second one in a series devoted to the study of properties of binaries involving M giants. Aims. The binary frequency of field M giants is derived and compared with the binary fraction of K giants. Methods. Diagrams of the CORAVEL spectroscopic parameter Sb (measuring the average line-width) vs. radial-velocity standard deviation for our samples are used to define appr...

Re - processing the Hipparcos Transit Data and Intermediate

Only 235 entries were processed as astrometric binaries with orbits in the Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogue (ESA 1997). However, the Intermediate Astrometric Data (IAD) and Transit Data (TD) made available by ESA make it possible to re-process the stars that turned out to be spectroscopic binaries after the completion of the Catalogue. This paper illustrates how TD and IAD may be used in conjuncti...

Spectroscopic binaries among Hipparcos M giants ⋆ III . The eccentricity - period diagram and mass - transfer signatures

Context. This paper is the third one in a series devoted to studying the properties of binaries involving M giants. Aims. We use a new set of orbits to construct the first (e− logP ) diagram of an extensive sample of M giant binaries, to obtain their mass-function distribution, and to derive evolutionary constraints for this class of binaries and related systems. Methods. The orbital properties...

A CORAVEL radial - velocity monitoring of giant Ba and S stars : spectroscopic orbits and intrinsic variations ( I ) ⋆

With the aim of deriving the binary frequency among Ba and S stars, 56 new spectroscopic orbits (46 and 10, respectively) have been derived for these chemicallypeculiar red giants monitored with the CORAVEL spectrometers. These orbits are presented in this paper (38 orbits) and in a companion paper (Udry et al. 1998, Paper II; 18 orbits). The results for 12 additional long-period binary stars (...

Astronomy & Astrophysics Orbits of new Hipparcos binaries . I

We present first orbits for 6 new Hipparcos binaries. The orbits were determined from speckle interferometric measurements collected mainly at the 6 m BTA telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory in Zelenchuk. Three of the systems, HIP 11352, HIP 14075 and HIP 14230, have late Gor early K-type components, while HIP 14669 = GJ 125, HIP 106972 = GJ 4210 and HIP 111685 = GJ 4287 have M-t...
